Earth Day #50

In the midst of this pandemic, we’ve made various lifestyle changes to conform to the guidelines advocated by the CDC. Many of these changes run parallel with a more sustainable lifestyle, whether we noticed any noteworthy changes or not. Transportation is the largest contributor towards greenhouse gas emissions, and we’ve lowered these numbers significantly. Cleaner air also improves solar panel efficiency, and is beneficial overall for every living organism. However, we’ve also witnessed how rapid urbanization and industrialization leads to deforestation and killing off predators that feed off rodents, resulting in an increase in rodent populations where these zoonotic diseases originate. The potential for more frequent epidemics looms if we don’t continue to design and implement effective conservation strategies, as a warmer planet is likely to be a less stable one.
